Steps to reproduce
Quiet some time ago (several months and some antennapod versions) my quota of mobile data was at the end by beginning of the month, I never had this before. I can see at system settings that antennapod has used 5 GB of mobile data. So I changed settings to only update my podcasts manually. Next month same issue, quota has reached limit at 6th day of month, reason was again antennapod. Then I changed device settings that antennapod can only use Wifi but not mobile data. Antennapod now uses no mobile data anymore, but I can see that after one or two days when not connected to Wifi antennapod will "forget" all episode and podcast images. Only grey squares are left at all episodes and podcasts. When connecting to Wifi then all images will be loaded again. Next day without Wifi all images are lost again.
I guess there's something wrong with handling of embedded images. With enabled mobile data I guess images get lost on the fly and are reloaded again and again. So mobile data quota will be eaten by antennapod all the time.
Maybe this is related to #7836, #6755 and #6620
Expected behaviour
One embedded images are downloaded the should not get lost and downloaded again.

Can you please clear the app cache via the Android app settings (note: not storage as that would trash all your data) and see if that somehow stabalises things?
What's the memory situation on your phone? Is there little space left?
Currently my phone is offline, but from last Wifi-Connection this morning all episode images are there. I just cleared the app cache and with next start of antennapod all images were gone. Now I connect to Wifi and all images were downloaded again. Mobile Data is still disabled for antennapod. With this Wifi-connection to download images (maybe also the feeds) antennapod used 300 MB Wifi-data. Also images from already played and deleted episodes seem to be downloaded again, this I can see at "Abspielverlauf" (maybe History in english?).
About memory situation, there's about 8 or 10 % free space on the phone.
Do you think this behavior could be caused by memory situation?

This might be expected, depending on your number of subscriptions and the number of episodes they each have. We've seen in the past that some podcasters include a rediculously high quality cover image for their podcast or (one of) the episodes, but that's hard to investigate and with this number I wouldn't expect anything odd.

That's correct/expected.

It could have: If you have >2 GB of free space available, then the image cache gets up to 250 MB, if you have less space available then the image cache is limited to 50 MB. That system was introduced with #5308.
If your free space jumps around that threshold (2GB) then the cache manager could delete and then re-download images. If that happens a couple of times, it can add up.
If your image cache is full, then the cache manager deleted the least recently used image. When that happens, you'll see it as a grey square in the app. (source)
If you can afford it, you can disable all mobile updates and enable the different options (refresh, cover images, synchronisation) one by one to confirm what's the culprit.
Curious to hear if after this image reset things might stabilise (if you don't see the high download numbers any-more).
OK, I deleted some stuff so I have 7 GB free space on internal storage now. Do you think the image cache should not be deleted any more? Current cache size is about 80 MB.

Let's see. Normally it shouldn't, based on the specs from those changes.
