We should try to get secure checksums. If they aren't supported by the original project we should have at least our own in order to prevent later corruptions or manipulations.

What is the state of this PR? Shall I merge #9269 first and you'll update yours then?

Alas it's tedious to find failing packages as some package builds will only fail during mass builds (eg. by running gmake publish in the top level folder) and build ok...

So please change the commit message and update the PR so I can merge.
