Add "presents" system

Open Nonononoki opened this issue 2 years ago • 7 comments

To increase frequent logins, you receive 1 "present" each day (European Central Time). Presents can be gifted to any user, increasing user interaction. When gifted, the receiving party will receive a notification in alerts page. Alerts page will be extended and will have two pages. Presents can be viewed in profile in form of stickers.

To increase frequent logins

why? to increase investors profits? seems not useful in an ethical app

increase usefulness for users

@davidak More active users = better platform, at least that's what I believe

better platform for whom? it's better for a company and it's inverstors if people spend more time, because they see more ads

you reproduce the methods of surveillance capitalism. but that is not the projects goal

The Ethical Design Manifesto says:

Technology that respects human effort is functional, convenient, and reliable.

It respects the limited time you have on this planet.

This feature would violate that!

The app should help a user to find interesting people and not waste their time!

It's better for users because it adds one more level of interaction and more active users leads to even more users, which increases the chance for a match.

How is that a meaningful interaction? How does it respect my time and effort?

Don't add interaction options for the sake of interactions. Focus on the core goal.

The goal of the app is to meet new people. So the best outcome would be:

  1. register
  2. look for interesting people
  3. find one interesting person
  4. message them
  5. if both are interested, plan to meet

never use the app again

so one could even argue, the less time people spend there, the better the platform is (the better it achieves it's goal)

That's some interesting discussion going on here!

The ethical point is fair enough, but I also see the one by Nonononoki: the app needs to expand in order to be efficient at the moment and this could be a way to make people come back and check how it is going/improving/expanding, so could this feature be added as a clearly-stated optional one (if development is not so resource-hungry)? As an open-source software it could also be proposed as an extension-like thing, like if someone wants it they can add it, even through an open process of development and awareness on the current ethical concerning about it (then it's still up to the person)!

P.S.: sorry for jumping into the issue, please do tell me if it's not appreciated, as i usually either don't comment or comment after ages (so i see i'm not properly making it easy for discussion) thus i'd totally understand it and avoid in case :F
