Well, you should search for another fork of ES, because the original software was abandoned be @Aloshi – very sad.

Recalbox is based on ES: https://github.com/recalbox

Alternatively, have a look at the Retropie branch: https://github.com/RetroPie/EmulationStation

Both of these forks appear to be for Raspberry Pi. Is there a fork for desktop development? I prefer to run my emulator on a Windows PC.

ddelella avatar Feb 19 '17 17:02 ddelella

I wish this project would open up again... so many little things that could be updated.

Finally found a front end that I love and it's no longer updated...sigh

DavidinCT avatar Feb 27 '17 17:02 DavidinCT

Is there any of the forks of ES that is based on Windows ? I dont want to run a PI as I want more power....

DavidinCT avatar Mar 07 '17 19:03 DavidinCT

Yes for linux x86 and X64: https://batocera-linux.xorhub.com/ For windows! I do not know, sorry

alio92140 avatar Mar 19 '17 03:03 alio92140

@ddelella and @DavidinCT recalbox runs also on PC (X86) and PC (X86_64)

lackyluuk avatar Mar 28 '17 13:03 lackyluuk

@lackyluuk So, where is the recallbox Windows version ? I looked over their site it only sends me to the emulationstation website, the same version I am running. I need Windows running due to other things I do, including movies and TV/recorded tv (Windows Media Center), so changing is not an option.

Looking to install a updated version of Emulation Station, as the current version is good but, handfull of issuses.

DavidinCT avatar Mar 28 '17 14:03 DavidinCT

@DavidinCT Here you go: http://archive.recalbox.com/updates/v1.0/unstable/

lackyluuk avatar Mar 28 '17 15:03 lackyluuk

But be aware since this is 4.1 unstable :)

lackyluuk avatar Mar 28 '17 15:03 lackyluuk

@lackyluuk that is linux not Windows. I need a Windows one, NOT linux.

They are bootable images, that does nothing for my needs on my system, It need to run ON WINDOWS 7 or 8.1

DavidinCT avatar Mar 28 '17 15:03 DavidinCT

@DavidinCT windows version based on the retropie fork: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/9094/updated-emulationstation-for-windows

enjoy :)

dankcushions avatar Mar 28 '17 15:03 dankcushions

@dankcushions thanks ! Dam, now I wish I knew the differences between the one up on emulationstation, org for Windows... I have not been watching the RetroPie progress because I had no interest in running it.

Dam, I will be following that thread...very cool

DavidinCT avatar Mar 28 '17 16:03 DavidinCT

@DavidinCT Oh damn, your right :/ I am so sorry!

lackyluuk avatar Mar 28 '17 18:03 lackyluuk

@lackyluuk No worrries thanks for your help anyway :+1:

DavidinCT avatar Mar 28 '17 18:03 DavidinCT

@DavidinCT I was right I think :D the link I sent IS recalbox for windows (bootable images for PC_X86). It runs on windows :)

Anyone stumbling across this issue looking for a Windows version, check out RetroCake: https://github.com/Flerp/RetroCake

It's basically the RetroPie script recreated for Windows. It uses this fork of EmulationStation which is forked from RetroPie's fork: https://github.com/jrassa/EmulationStation

einsteinx2 avatar Jun 02 '18 17:06 einsteinx2

How updated is RetroCake ? I've been running Emulation station spread across 2 drives (as Emulation station requires to be in the local profile) on my Windows 7 HTPC for a long time now... Roms and emulators are stored on a 60gb SSD, like them to start quick, as the desktop shows when they are loading. Would love to take care of some issues..

Would love to update to get some newer features. I have a Xbox 360 wireless controller just for Emulation station...any issuses with this version ?

Thanks for letting us Windows users know about this...

@DavidinCT From what I can tell it's very up to date. In fact the latest commit was yesterday. I use it for my personal setup and it's great at what it does. It grabs the latest release of EmulationStation from the jrassa fork (which is basically RetroPie's fork with some fixes for Windows from what I can tell), and it grabs the latest release of RetroArch. So everything should be very up to date. Then it does a bunch of default setup for you like creating rom folders and setting up the es_systems.cfg for you for a ton of systems.

I had no issues using the script to get my setup started and then I manually tweaked it from there for my preferences. Overall the experience is very similar to RetroArch, but it is compatible with Windows only emulators like Demul, PCSX2, RPCS3, Cemu, etc.

Also I just submitted a pull request on Saturday to the jrassa fork to fix showing gamedata.xml metadata for roms larger than 2GB (such as PS2 ISOs). I'm not sure how much that fork is submitting back upstream, so I may submit it to the RetroPie fork directly as well as it's broken there too.

I'm actively contributing improvements to jrassa's fork as I find them, and that fork seems very active as well as the RetroPie fork it's based on. So EmulationStation is definitely not dead, just this repository!

Also regarding the Xbox 360 controller, as long as it works for you in Windows in general then it should work great in EmulationStation, RetroPie, and the other emulators. Also PS4 controllers work well using DS4Windows (that's what I use).

einsteinx2 avatar Jun 04 '18 20:06 einsteinx2

Cool, Thanks for the update. All automated setup for the emulators, cool.

I might backup my system and nuke my current install to give this a shot. I stepped back from RetroPie because I don't want to use a PI, I have a nice powerful system for a HTPC, that with a trial can even run SOME WIiU games (found that to be impressive), the PI is very limited. I noticed very limited updates in the past on the Windows version.

IS there a global setting for exiting a game and going back to the menu ? The reason why I am afraid to play with another version is I tweaked (360 controller) to hit the Start and select at the same time and it exits the game back to the menu... This was a big deal, it was a PIA to set it all up, as not everything uses RetroArch.

Thank you for the info !

DavidinCT avatar Jun 05 '18 12:06 DavidinCT

Unfortunately there is no global setting for exiting emulators that I'm aware of. For Retroarch, you have to open the menu and manually select the exit option. For others, it's generally not possible with a controller at all.

My solution is to use Autohotkey. It has a bit of a learning curve but it can be used to have the same button combo to exit all emulators. I personally prefer to use start, select, L, and R so that I can still use start + select to get to the RertroArch settings. I'm still working on my script, but I have a proof of concept. When I finish my whole setup, I'll probably make a repo with a wiki, my custom scripts, etc.

I'm still getting there though. I've got everything mostly working great, but still have more work to do with the standalone emulators and the autohotkey stuff. I've also been trying to fix bugs as I find them, like the 2GB file limit problem.

einsteinx2 avatar Jun 05 '18 20:06 einsteinx2

Have you issued the 2gb file problem? It´s giving me crazy. Im using emulastation under windows and WII or PS2 big isos are not readen by gamefiles.xml........

Any way to fix this?? REGARDS.

goyetus avatar Jul 29 '18 23:07 goyetus

For anyone else stumbling on this, yep I fixed it and the pull request is here: https://github.com/RetroPie/EmulationStation/pull/468

einsteinx2 avatar Aug 01 '18 01:08 einsteinx2

So basically we have 3 forks (retropie, recalbox and batocera) slowwwwly diverging... so this is sad

Is not there an unified proyect anymore?
