DPL: improve detection of first device in chain

Only rely on the stdin state to fetch configuration.

Thanks @ktf , but the problem was seen only in the grid, https://its.cern.ch/jira/browse/O2-4979?focusedId=6441415&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-6441415. If you are sure this commit does not harm, we would need to merge it at test on the grid with the nightly.
