wifi not working with wifi adapter

No matter what i set in my config, when connected to wifi it uses the ethernet format or default format instead of wifi. trying to override this weird behavior with the essid in the ethernet module casues it to dissapear. I'm not sure if this problem is due to the fact im using a wifi adapter, but for some reason it just can't think it's using wifi even when it is. everything else on my laptop detects that i am using wifi just fine (nmtui doesnt list it as a wired network, but as wireless) pls help
