is the VOC style mask work with overlapped instance ground truth? (lungs and lesion)

I don't think there are really any overlaps between instances, as the images are not 3D. There are a total of 3 classes(lungs, GGO, Consolidation) that I binarize (per instance), similar to MS COCO.
