I've had desire in the past from previous ore spawning mods for a way for one of my mods to tell where ore was generating with coords to the center...

One of my favorite mods is TerraFirmaCraft which has a rather useful ore spawning system where hints of deeper ore can appear on the surface as items like ore nuggets....
