DNS filtering kills internet speed

Galaxy Note 10+ with Android 10, galaxy note 10 with Android 10, nexus 6 with Android 9. No devices are rooted. All devices using nightly builds of adguard (latest build)

The issue... Internet speeds on my gigabit connection when using adguard are beyond horrible and fine when WiFi is shut off OR wifi is on and adguard is shut off. This began before the covid issue and roughly 3 nighly builds ago.

I did some more playing around trying to figure this odd situation out when I disabled DNS filtering altogether and instantly webpages and downloads were.. well instant.

So I rebooted all my network equipment and my phones then turned DNS filtering back on and again it would take up to a min to load any webpage and downloading even small apps from the play store would take around 4 min.

I shut DNS filtering off again and again all web pages loaded instantly and app downloads that were even 100mb downloaded in 1-2 seconds.

I haven't checked the stable build of adguard for android yet but on 3 different phones with the nightly builds installed this issue was present and instantly fixed by shutting off DNS filtering.

Tested with adguard, cloudflare, Google and Comcast DNS. Same results occur with all.

@d0x360

What DNS resolver is selected when internet speed slows down? Have you been trying to select other DNS server or change the DNS server type like DoH/DoT/Regular/Crypt?

@d0x360 commented on Fri Apr 10 2020

All the DNS servers listed would run at the same speed. A webpage would take like a min to start loading. Immediately after shutting dns filtering off pages loaded instantly.

I only used the regular ones in settings and I have no custom rules.

This issue didn't occur until about 3 nightly builds ago, I'm sorry I don't have a date or exact version#

@d0x360

Could you please check it with the stable release?

This needs to be re-tested on the new nightly when it's out

Hello!

The new AdGuard for Android Nightly 16 is rolled out with a possible fix that can solve the issue. Could you be so kind and update to check again?

TheHasagi avatar Apr 15 '20 19:04 TheHasagi

Of course, I will install it on 2 devices and post back in 24 hours with my results.

Ok I have tested it extensively. Websites, video, support chat with Google lol.

I tried every DNS method, regular, https etc and I also tested multiple DNS providers on a note 10+ and a note 9 both running Android 10.

The update didn't seem to help. I was running into the same issues on some sites and turning off DNS filtering fixed it immediately.

Also another user posted they have the same issue on aduard.com forums

@d0x360 to troubleshoot this issue, we need to get additional logs.

Here's what we need you to do:

  1. Open AdGuard -> Settings -> Advanced -> Set "Logging level" to "Record everything". It's desirable to close all background apps that don't concern the problem beforehand.
  2. Reproduce the issue and set the logging level back to "Default".
  3. Remember the exact time when the issue was reproduced, we will need it to find the corresponding records in the log file.
  4. Open AdGuard -> Settings -> Advanced -> Export Logs
  5. Send both files to [email protected]. Mention the Github issue number and the exact time when the issue was reproduced.

Ok, I will do it on Saturday. I have a bunch of meetings today so I'm going to be stupid busy all day and most of the evening.

Thanks.

Sorry covid got in the way via a family member. I will do everything tomorrow (Tues) early afternoon.

I've been trying to figure out stuff via filtering logs, like when on wifi using Google's keyboard if I hit the gif button and do a search it won't ever load anything but if I switch to 4g it loads instantly. That's on cloudflare regular dns.
