Issue Details
It seems to be happening very randomly, but the longer my browser is open and the more tabs open / memory used seems to greatly increase the chance of this happening, and once it happens once, it doesn't seem to fix itself, even when disabling and reenabling the extension, without a complete browser restart.
The issue is occurring across several weeks and multiple Chrome Profiles with separate installs of AdGuard.
I apologize I can't give any more useful specifics, but I'm very confused on why this is happening.
Expected Behavior
Upon clicking the toolbar icon, the popup.html should render the popup.html React DOM properly.
Actual Behavior
The popup window simply shows the .animated-loader__video element permanently, none of .popup-header. .main-container, .tabs, .footer, or .notifications are ever rendered, but I can see these files loading, all status 200 with no loading errors in the console:
chrome-extension://bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg/pages/popup.html
chrome-extension://bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg/pages/popup.js
chrome-extension://bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg/runtime.js

chrome-extension://bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg/vendors/mobx.js
chrome-extension://bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg/assets/videos/loading.webm
It's as if the JavaScript is being loaded but never executed.

Hi @jsilvermist Thanks for info! We'll check it.
I was in contact with support for about two weeks with the same issue. I hope, you can find and fix the root cause. It has not appeared for a week now, but before almost every day for also about one or two weeks.
Hi @kriegaex! Could you please tell me if links like this - link.adtidy.info/forward.html?action=adguard_uninstall_ext&from=background_page&app=vpn_extension — stay open for you, and whether you use any additional extensions?
@dmitriivqa39, I do not know you are or what kind of link you just sent. Please elaborate. I want to be sure what I am doing, for what reason and on whose behalf. Thank you.
@kriegaex This is a link that appears automatically after uninstalling one of the extensions - you don’t need to open it.
I was wondering: could it be that your browser has the “Continue where you left off” setting turned on? If so, and if you recently removed an extension, the post-uninstallation page might still be open in the background. In some cases, that page can affect how other extensions work.
If possible, could you please check whether such a tab is still open?
Also, could you let us know which other extensions you currently have installed? It’s possible that one of them might be contributing to this issue.
Thanks!
@dmitriivqa39, said link redirects me to https://link.adtidy.info/''/404.html: "404 page not found".
could it be that your browser has the “Continue where you left off” setting turned on?
Yes, always.
If possible, could you please check whether such a tab is still open?
How would I check that?
Also, could you let us know which other extensions you currently have installed?
@kriegaex
How would I check that?
Click Ctrl + Shift + A for Win/Linux or ⌘ + Shift + A for Mac and search for links e.g. https://welcome.adguard.com/
Thank you for your list of the extensions - we'll check it.
@dmitriivqa39, no corresponding open tabs found. I thought you were referring to some invisible tab in the background or so, not the normal open ones, hence the previous question.
I’m experiencing the same issue where the AdGuard popup remains stuck on a loading spinner and never finishes opening.
I found a temporary workaround that strongly suggests the problem is related to AdGuard getting stuck while loading filters during startup.
Temporary workaround
- Click the AdGuard extension icon.
- Right-click inside the popup → AdGuard AdBlocker → Pause AdGuard protection.
- Restart Chrome.
- Click the AdGuard extension icon again.
Result: The popup now loads correctly, but protection is disabled (as expected).
Click the AdGuard icon and re-enable protection (play icon in the top-right corner).
Observed behavior: Everything works normally until Chrome is restarted again with AdGuard protection enabled. After that restart, the popup is once again stuck on the loading spinner.
Hi @clementcampagna, Could you please let me know which additional extensions you’re using and, if possible, share some logs from the extension startup? How to get logs
Hi @dmitriivqa39,
The issue occurs even when using Chrome 143.0.7499.170 (Official Build) (64-bit) in Incognito mode, with no other extensions enabled besides AdGuard.
Please find the startup logs attached.
@kriegaex @clementcampagna
Could you please share your PC specifications (OS version, CPU, RAM, GPU) and record a Chrome trace of the issue?
To capture the trace:
- Go to chrome://tracing in Chrome.
- Click Record, reproduce the problem, then click Stop.
- Save the trace file and send it to us along with your system info.
This will help us determine if the issue is related to your hardware or browser configuration.
Thank you!
@clementcampagna Thank you very much! Could you please tell me how many filters you have turned on?
@dmitriivqa39 No worries, thanks for your help!
After some additional testing, I found that disabling all filter lists except the main Ad Blocking filter resolves the issue.
As soon as additional filters are re-enabled, the problem reappears after restarting Chrome.
@clementcampagna Could you please import your settings to reproduce the behavior exactly with your settings? Go to Settings -> General -> Export settings and send them to this issue Thank you!
Please note that the same AdGuard configuration does not trigger the issue on a more powerful computer.
Based on this, I suspect the problem may be related to slower hardware, where applying a large number of filter rules during startup takes longer and causes AdGuard to get stuck or fail to complete its initialization.
To me, the question rather is: Why would previous versions of AdGuard never make problems in past years, even on older hardware with identical filter settings, but now suddenly there are the observed problems? What has changed in the architecture, the design or relevant parts of the code (or of Google Chrome, for that matter) to possibly have caused this?
Hello! I see an absolutely similar problem. The problem did not appear today, but rather at least a couple of weeks ago. Moreover, the problem persists after the complete removal and re-installation of the extension without additional configuration. If we consider the assumption of a connection with a large number of tabs, then I also fall into this case (there are quite a lot of tabs open). But there is no lack of memory or high CPU usage.
Piling on... I too see this problem. Only seven filter lists are enabled in four filter categories. Older hardware.
@gerchikov @Larin-A Thanks for feedback!
@gerchikov @Larin-A @clementcampagna Could you please tell me if you had the same problem on weak machines with AdGuard VPN extension? We use a similar method to show enable/disable animation.
Thanks!
@dmitriivqa39 I do not use AdGuard VPN extension, sorry.
@dmitriivqa39 I tried the specified extension (I don't use it). I haven't seen any problems with animation freezing or endless animation, but I can't confirm that it's working, probably due to restrictions in my country.
