Adguard VPN Browser extension causing leaking

Open AnthGood opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

Hi, I am posting this hoping you can fix this.

I have Adguard VPN Premium subscription. And I use it via Chrome browser extension on a Windows 11 PC on Brave Browser. I know you can install the Windows 11 app. But I like using it by Browser extension due to simplicity.

I have noticed if I close Brave and have https://ipleak.net, webpage open on it and Adguard VPN extension running.

When I then reopen Brave I see it is revealing my normal IP, location, DNS, DNS location and everything else. It takes about 5 seconds for the VPN to kick in and start showing what Adguard VPN is set as.

I thought this was just a limitation of VPN browser extensions. However if I have Windscribe VPN browser extension installed on the exact same browser (and obviously Adguards browser extension disabled). And I do the exact same test. This does not happen and straight away it shows the Windscribe VPN IP, DNS and everything else. There are no leaks whatsoever at any time.

Therefore it seems Adguard VPN is leaking through the browser extension when Windscribe is not. Is there anyway you can fix the Chrome browser extension so it does not do this please as it is a major security risk having it leak like this.

I have a similar situation; I finish running a bunch of tests and quit the browser between tests, and in the end, nothing works.

OS: macOS Ventura 13.4.1 AdGuard for Mac: Version 2.10.1.1277 release using custom DNS: quic://****.d.adguard-dns.com Microsoft Edge: Version 114.0.1823.58 (Official build) (arm64) AdGuard Browser extension: Version 4.1.56 AdGuard VPN: Version 1.4.22 using custom DNS: tls://*******.d.adguard-dns.com

http://adguard-dns.io Dashboard doesn't show any of the VPN DNS transactions; instead, for every request I made on Edge, I see a transaction for quic instead of the TLS; both adguard test page and http://adguard-dns.io map say that I'm on whatever country I choose for the VPN, but the request showing on adguard-dns.io are from quic so either the browser or the extension are routing the transaction to the right custom DNS.

FYI: I disabled all of Microsoft's Edge settings that could have been leaking data

I tried that on linux and the extension shows in any browser (Firefox or Chromium or based on either) that it is connected but no traffic is send through the VPN. It is like there is no VPN "connected" even when it says it would be.
