Swag Store feedback

Open jmertic opened this issue 1 year ago • 13 comments

We launched a new swag store at Open Source Days!

https://store.aswf.io

Seeing that there is already a Slack thread, Let's capture some feedback in the store in this ticket to make it a bit more structured. Thanks for all your feedback.

Hello,

I don't have any context about this store, was there some announcement somewhere else ? Asking cause it would be cool to know a bit more how it work, why it was created, ...

After a first look, it feels really impersonal. Logos look to be applied on an overwhelming quantity of products with no care if they fit the aesthetic of that product. Like for example this teeshirt where the logo is barely visible, or that hoodie with a logo cut in half :

Of course you can just pick another color, or don't pick that product, because anyway, we have a lot of choices. But I feel this contributes to making the store look impersonal. Currently I would rather just download the logo of the ASWF project I like, and manually create my design on the various online platform offering this kind of similar printing service. Which would offer me more flexibility and choice.

What I would really like to see instead is offering way less choice, but with designs that have been hand-picked to fit on a product or even custom design that are not just the regular project's logo (someone mentioned on slack a multicolour variant of the OCIO logo for example !). I can understand that maybe the ASWF doesn't have the resources for this, but in the current state I feel like I could just do it myself on some other websites and I will get the same result (minus maybe the commission you get on the sales ?).

Cheers. Liam.

Most important comment is that this is awesome!

The only suggestions I have at the moment:

  • I noticed that some projects have very few product choices, compared to others. (By like a factor of 10!)

  • All projects' artwork have color, black, and white logos, as well as logo+text and logo only variants. Might be nice to allow the full cross-product of those logo choices versus underlying object. This can help address what @MrLixm said about logo and product colors sometimes being poorly matched.

  • This is a solid first stab that didn't require any new graphic design. But it would be nice in the future if we had the ability to add truly custom designs to the automatically generated ones.

Hi all. We are taking your feedback and working to make changes to the logos and product colors, and options. If you have any additional suggestions, please feel free to keep sending them to us.

Hello everyone. The store has been updated. You will find the logos are better matched with color options and the offerings are not as overwhelming. We continue to welcome feedback. https://store.aswf.io/

This is definitely better - I would still love to be able to control what items/colors use which logo (for OCIO, that's magenta, black, white). It's better now that you don't have the option of a magenta logo on a pink shirt, but via our brand guide, the magenta logo is only really supposed to go over white - if it's over black, we use the white logo. There's also nothing wrong with putting our white logo on any color shirt someone might want to get.

I'd also love to be able to add in our other logo variations, but only on certain things. Like, just the icon would look great on a baseball cap. But not so great alone on a tshirt. I'm happy to curate this for OCIO, if it's possible.

Last but not least - I wonder if there is a sticker option without a transparent background? Would prefer if it was our magenta logo on a white square.

If you want specific colors, I can make the individual logos to show only those. I can make the shirts all white if that is preferred.

If there are specifics like that, colors and logos, please send them to me via email and I will make the changes.

Perhaps out of ASWFs control, but the wording in the description of this backpack isn't exactly best in class when it comes to inclusive language.

Hi there. I just saw it and I see what you mean. Unfortunately, that is copy I have no control over. I can remove the item completely if you'd like.

yarille avatar Sep 20 '23 19:09 yarille

Haha, it took me a minute to realize that you had to scroll down and I was looking at only the top half trying really hard to figure out what you could possibly be referring to...

But yeah, oof, that's an awkward description of who might want it.

Don't remove it on my behalf only. I just got quite surprised that such a description still exists. Perhaps we should reach out to them.

First off - I want to pile on and say I love this!

On the topic of logo variants (color scheme, text/no text) - what is the best way for the projects to make suggestions about what options should be available where? I think the OpenTimelineIO project people would love to take a stab at honing in the options.

Also, what assets is this site using for the logos? Is it the SVG artwork or rasterized PNG?

reinecke avatar Oct 04 '23 20:10 reinecke

Hey @reinecke - feel free to leave comments here, or ping @yarille directly if that's easier.

Assets-wise, we are trying to get EPS versions of all the artwork to use, as that seems to have the best quality for print. If we don't have that, we fallback on the PNG version.

Looking at the OTIO swag it seems to me like the color on the OTIO logo is a bit off. The greens look quite different from the logos on the repo: Dark Logo Dark Logo In the store:
