section headers at end of page or column

I often have the issue that a section header ends up at the bottom of a page with the text following it at the start of the next page (or next column on the same page). It's not too pretty, and I don't think it is the default LaTeX behavior. I think the problem might be in AASTeX's redefinition of the \section{} command, but the .cls files are mostly Greek to me. A fix would be great!
