I think we should probably default to frenchspacing. It looks better, it is preferred by Bringhurst, and it obviates all the \_ stuff.

For reference: below I'm uploading two screenshots of the most recent TeX I had lying around, one with regular spacing, one with French. The differences are subtle but there — you'd want to download the images and then blink them to be able to see. (E.g., in the final line before the second display equation, in one version the first word is "the", in the other it is "tool".)

My feelings are:

1. I think French does look better
2. The goal of the AASTeX style should be to look good, not necessarily to mimic exactly what IOP's production yields.
