Allows add opensearch engine

Open LexaNz opened this issue 9 months ago • 7 comments

Will be a great thing to have the ability to add any search engine using opensearch format.

So we could choose which search engine to use rather than just duckduckgo or google.

Nova launcher has this feature, simply ask to enter search engine name and query string

Eg: https://mysearchengine.domain/search&q=%s

Where %s is the word/string searched.

Cheers

@8bitPit could we please get an update on this feature request from you guys (Niagara Launcher Dev Team)? It's one of the most requested features from your community - here are the related GitHub requests for this exact feature that are still open: #2711, #2840, #2843, #3281, #3298.

Please note that the entire Niagara Launcher community contributing to this GitHub repository loves the launcher and wants to help improve it by reporting bugs, suggesting new features or just their improvements. Unfortunately, almost all of the requests and bug reports submitted since February 2025 have gone unanswered by your team. The lack of communication has led all of us users to the conclusion that the project may be dead, and that the Dev Team might no longer see value in continuing development on what many consider one of the best Android custom launchers.

Hey @witooski, apologies for the silence on GitHub. We're in the process of migrating away from GitHub to Featurebase. Soon, all our resources will point to the new platform instead of GitHub. If you are interested why we're doing this, I pasted our announcement from our beta communities below. I hope this helps.

Community announcement:

📣 Announcement - New Platform for Feature Requests and Bug Reports TL;DR: Feature requests and bug reports are moving from GitHub Issues to our own feedback board and are now easier to create and upvote!

Hi everyone, we are glad to have such an active community who reports issues and brings feedback and ideas to the table! It's valuable input for us, so thank you! However, our current method of collecting and discussing feature requests, feedback in general, and bug reports, GitHub, is lacking in several aspects.

🛑 Problems with GitHub - our current feedback platform GitHub is a platform intended for software developers and it shows. The user interface is strange at times, and a GitHub account is required to post and comment. We think this makes it more difficult to give us feedback. We also think it is missing some key features like automatically suggesting existing tickets and help page articles during ticket creation, as well as an upvote feature so we can better track what is important to you. Discoverability of existing tickets was low on GitHub leading to a lot of duplicates, which made it difficult to extract information and see the most important tickets. We migrated some of the most active tickets to the new platform. However, due to the moderation issues mentioned earlier, we decided it's best to start mostly fresh. If you previously opened or participated in an issue on GitHub, please feel free to create it again here. Sorry for the inconvenience.

🏁 Our goals • Making the feedback process easier and more accessible • Getting a better feel for what's important to you • Be more transparent on what we are working on • Making it easier to see our thoughts on common requests

🚚 Moving to a new platform This is the motivation behind us moving from GitHub to our own feedback board and we hope you will be as active there as you have been on GitHub.

✏️ Giving feedback is easier than ever Even if you have not been actively posting on GitHub, please give the new feedback board a look every now and then and help make your opinion visible by upvoting tickets that sound exciting or useful to you.

💙 Thank you Thanks again for all your feedback! See you on our new feedback board: https://feedback.niagaralauncher.com.

About the request itself, one of the top-voted requests on the new platform is support for more search engines, I hope we can share news about that soon.

Thanks @8bitPit for shedding light on why the Niagara's GitHub community feels like a ghost town these days. I've already upvoted the request for additional search engines in your new platform. This feature has been long awaited by the community, and its implementation would make a real difference.
