App Name Tags / Alternative app names for searching

Open humbleplantdad opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem?

Not necessary but it is an annoyance when you changed the name of an app to be more helpful and aesthetic pleasing but also don't always habitually look up the new name

Describe the solution you'd like

although I love being able to rename apps, it could be made so much better by adding a subsection of tags under the app name. This would be a place for secondary names that might be searched for about the same app. in most cases I would automatically put the original name in the tag section so although the user renamed it, it could be found under that name. I would add a toggle for the feature so the sneaky people hiding apps still can make theirs incognito. I would still thought open the field for tags for up to 3-5. For example: the user could set the app "Google photos" to; "photos" as main app title, "gallery," "memories," "pictures," "google photos" as tags so any put into the search would still lead to the main app title. thankyou for your consideration

Feature Request Procedure

We appreciate your suggestion.

Allowing users to search for apps using alternative names sounds interesting. However, this might confuse users about why certain apps appear as results. It would also require users to be able to setup additional names and change them. This means adding more complex behavior and settings, and we are a bit apprehensive about adding too many customization settings.

This is an interesting concept though, so we will discuss this internally.

I would also love to see how the community reacts to such a feature to see if there is enough of a userbase to warrant implementation.

Hi again,

We have taken a look internally and decided not to add this functionality at this time. Niagara Launcher is not primarily search-focused, so adding this much customizability for alternative app names adds too much complexity for what it's worth.

We plan on improving the search in the future, but we want to do it, so it's intuitive and easy for everyone. Something like a category-based search seems closest to your request. However, I will leave this open for now since I am still interested in the community's opinion.

do not give that freedom. But offer fixed tag to attach with app like : game, music, social. That will solve all issue of both of you
