Add more web search engines / providers

Open TFackler opened this issue 1 year ago • 24 comments

Currently when using web suggestions in Niagara Launcher's search, you can choose between DuckDuckGo and Google as the search engine.

We are considering adding more search engines/providers and want to collect feedback from the community. Which search engines would you like to see?

Search Engine Feasibility
Bing ?
Brave ?
Custom search engine ?
Kagi ?
Perplexity ?
Start Page ?
Customizable (via URL) ?

The main issue with customizable search engines is that the response we receive from the web page needs to be parsed, likely making suggestions infeasible.

I like to see Brave Search, Bing and Startpage as options and/or a input for add a custom search engine with an optional suggestions url too like this Screenshot_20240530_121732_Firefox.png

Thank you so much for this feature! Lack of web search was my main missed tool after being forced away from Evie.

For search, I also prefer Kagi, but it's a paid service, so it doesn't make sense as a default, therefore a custom engine option is my vote. If it makes a difference, I don't find search suggestions very useful, I just want to be able to search Kagi from the Niagara search bar.

+1 for Startpage, it seems like the closest Google substitute for simply searching without any user tracking (while Duckduckgo for e.g. is more of a Bing substitute).

A custom option would be great too, with input for the search query and the suggestions query.

I would like Start page, but would prefer a custom input.

The ability to add a search engine, similar to how a web browser allows custom search engines to be added would be great. Considering I am paying for Kagi, but my main method of searching (through Niagra launcher) is not possible, seems like a waste.

Preferably to set my own search provider as has been suggested by others. But I would take the addition of Brave Search.

I recently switched from Bing to DDG for bangs. I feel seen 😅

Perplexity

I exclusively use the app on mobile but #2269 would be nice (for YouTube, Maps, etc. too)!

Custom search engine

If this were implemented it'd be nice to automatically detect it by domain using OpenSearch like Kvaesitso.

Would love to see Brave as well

Bing as search option. That's where all my rewards reside.

Just wanted to chime in, would like to see custom search engine. I host my own searxng instance and would love to be able to use it. Additionally in implementation, I believe most engines support the following search URL scheme, in case it helps

https://<domain>/search?q=

I switched to Kvaesitso since my comment. Its custom search engines work exceedingly well. For my use case I only miss the default icon packs and wallpapers.

Yes. Please add Bing.

+1 for Kagi. Nova launcher can do it with a custom engine, including the recommendations

I see noone mentioning, Ecosia, Quant, Startpage, Searchx.

I think the best (and most "futureproof") would be to allow people to specify search engine themselves via the opensearch format.
