But could still hook it up to esp8266 and write to it?

no you can use the i2c or uart bus on the other side. from your first picture at the top of the issue

when I installed it as shown in: https://github.com/FD-/RPiPlay/issues/296#issuecomment-981210609 and Opened it in: ~/RPiPlay/build with: ./rpiplay -b auto -n "AirPlay" -vr rpi -ar rpi -a hdmi -l my choppy sound problem...
Looks nice, I use EasyMQTT on the side, there you can use graphs once you connect in the app to the Broker. Afterwards you can choose the Broker to connect...
