Syntax highlighting fails if comment not at beginning of line

Comments are not highlighted properly as comments unless they are at the beginning of a line. Here is an example:

It looks like it is looking for a * after a newline, when it should be looking for a * after a newline or ;.

This appears to be a duplicate of #2 which doesn't appear to have been resolved. Not sure why it was closed.
