Please clarify "legal reasons" regarding pull requests

Open fulldecent opened this issue 6 years ago • 3 comments

Contributors here are willing to assign copyright to you to make contributions to the project. Just wanted to ask please if you can explain further why pull requests are not accepted.

Dev != lawyer but I suppose merging your contribution would force @eofster to publish any proprietary source code. When a repository specifies a license, that's the default license for contributions. So in this case your contributions would fall under GPLv3, which enforces copyleft and is a protective rather than permissive license. Not necessarily a problem but it's something not to take lightly.

Understood. I have seen projects like the following:

  1. Repository license is GPL or dual licensed
  2. Contributions are only accepted if they are MIT

That's perhaps a suggestion to take into consideration. It's not up to me to decide though, so wait and see.
