what about plugins and gepard? Need not disable but use hercules without gepard installed. if use clean hercules issue still exists?

You can use SDL 1.2 and SDL 2 will works with both. SDL 1 used by default. For use SDL 2, need add configure flag --with-sdl2 What version to use?...

i think nothing changed in manaplus itself, but can be changed in distro what you using. can you show error messages?
try run ``./manaplus.sh 2>err.txt`` after script complete, show ``err.txt``
