Difference between replicas and vnodes

My apologies for asking a question in an issue, but I'm confused what the difference is between replicas and vnodes. I can't find a clear description of their differences online (most sites/papers seem to use the two terms interchangeably), nor do I actually see these documented in hash_ring or ketama, so I'm not sure if it's something unique to this library.
