Activate keyboard F-Keys?

Open Deftknot opened this issue 3 years ago • 10 comments

Hi guys,

I know that your focus is on device lightning but would it maybe be possible to activate the keyboard functions of F1-F12 somehow? Without having installed Synapse 2, the keys are not working on my M1 Mac Mini and i really would love to use it vor Volume and Spotify controlling. Thanks for your feedback and regards!

You can actually do this through apple's keyboard shortcuts by assigning a particular action to a function key.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to map play/pause etc but it's not working. Tried to add the shortcuts for all applications and as it was not working, for Spotify only. Same result.

I thought maybe getting Karabiner-Elements to map the keys but it is far overpowered for what i need and currently has a bug with M1 & MacOS 11.2

Anyone with an idea?

@Deftknot It seems like that issue with kernel panics in Karabiner-elements has been fixed with Big Sur 11.3+ [1] If you can get that working, it would just take a few steps to map your function keys to play/pause.

@Shubhang Hey mate, i am not thaaaat familiar with github and it took me quite a while to realise why my Karabiner request is answered in this thread haha. How did you see that a asked for this on Karabiner? Will try if karabiner works now again!

@Deftknot If you are looking for the function keys to do the functions labeled on them, go to System Preferences=> Keyboard=> Check the box: "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys on external keyboards."

Good ID but those are only available on Macbook. I am using a Mac Mini and this option doesnt exist in the keyboard settings.

Can you attach a screenshot of System Preferences=> Keyboard => "Keyboard" tab, so I can see what options exist? I don't have MacMini, MacPro, or iMac to check that.

Screenshots on MacOS: Command-Shift-4 => drag the crosshairs over the area

Also, do all of the other keys work as intended? Note that "num lock" is "clear" on MacOS. If not, I'll explain how to fix that.

Sure, please find some screenshot attached. They are in german, sorry. But I think you will still understand them :)

What do you mean by num lock is clear? I have a num lock and all keys off the keyboard are working as intended except the F1-F12 keys with their special functions like play/pause/next track.

Hey, I know this is a ~1 yr old post, but did anyone figure out a solution to this, aside from using a separate software like Karabiner? I'm also on an M1 Mini, with an Ornata Chroma, and it's extremely inconvenient to have to remember to press the FN key along with one of the F keys in order to use the function keys for volume up, volume down, mute, next and previous tracks, etc. Also, it seems that the game mode thing doesn't work at all with this software either, not that I care about that, really, though it would be nice to get a solution for that too Other than this one issue though, this software is pretty amazing It's a shame Razer didn't just open source the Mac Synapse and let the community fix it, and instead these amazing folks had to basically re-create it from scratch
