When I visited Mexico City in 2015, I only ever saw white-on-green signs as well. What do they look like on other maps, such as print maps?

There are some photos online of Eje Central having [a colored shield](https://twitter.com/andreslajous/status/1203354112063991809/photo/1) and Eje 2 Sur having [a black-on-white shield](https://cletofilia.com/inauguran-carril-trolebici-en-eje-2-sur-de-la-cdmx/). Maybe it’s newer?

This topic also comes up occasionally from mappers in Chicago, where something resembling block numbers are even printed on freeway guide signs, where they’re called “grid numbers”. These numbers have...

I added [a brief mention](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Special:PermanentLink/2321402#Examples_on_relations) in the examples section of the `ref` documentation [back in 2014](https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Special:Diff/1095947), but it’s easy to overlook.

Perhaps we should split this issue into motorways (which are ready and trivial to implement) and trunk roads (which still need a resolution on `ref` prefixes).
