fix stupid choices like the import paths and config.py existing

We should probably not be using config.py for configuration, that's not great. Also the relative path stuff and sys.path.append abuse is definitely not the play.

Feel free to fix either or both of these and drop a pr, otherwise I'll eventually get around to it.
