Flash Messenger Namespace Messages Return Nothing

Below works without vital namespace information.

$this->flashMessenger()->addMessage('You have successfully logged in.');

$this->flashMessenger()->getMessages();

Is this a correct statement? The general case works properly but the specific case is not?
