ctags-darwin: cannot open tag file : Permission denied

Running rebuild from a fresh install of atom-ctags:

atom-ctags: command error, ctags-darwin: Warning: ^[: incomplete regexp
ctags-darwin: cannot open tag file : Permission denied
 /app/.tags

Not sure what to do here. If I delete the .tags file:

atom-ctags:  Error: Tags file could not be opened: /app/.tags(…)

Same here. I tried trashing .tags and then touching a new .tags

atom-ctags can then read it but doesn't bother to write anything into it.

Same for me. Atom 1.9.2, MacOS X 10.11.6.
