Video plays in background

System kodi 17.6 on debian

When you select a video to play through "tvshows" in the web browser if the kodi is on home screen the video will play fine, if you select a video to play whilst one is currently playing it opens the new video (you can hear it) but shows a grey menu screen untill you press back twice to get to the video.

Chorus1 works fine with the above,

any ideas how to resolve this?
