Wire forced to re-login and deletes chat history and claims: device is used for the first time

Open Christian-Git01 opened this issue 5 years ago • 15 comments

Wire version: Version 3.19.2928 Wire for web version: 2020.08.26.0845 Operating system: Linux Manjaro (Arch-based) Which antivirus software do you have installed: none

What steps will reproduce the problem?

I used the account for about one year on this device and yesterday everything worked fine. I did not do any system changes and today I am forced to reenter my wire credentials and it says that this is the first time using this device, so my history will not appear. I also got an e-mail saying that I am using Wire on a new device.

What is the expected result? not having to login after one day and definitely not loosing the chat history ...

What is the actual result? chat history lost

Can I get my history back from the config or cache directory?

This happened to me too today, I'd very much like to find the history somewhere. Any ideas?

This may be related to #685.

Thanks for your comments. Perhaps my computer ran out of memory as well.

I don't think mine did, though I can't be sure. I've actually encountered this issue before, but this is the first time I haven't been able to recover simply by restarting Wire a couple of times.

And me too. Whats annoying, is that i have different device (phone), that has no problem, but i cannot import it's messages to desktop. Sucks a bit.

Probably duplicate of https://github.com/wireapp/wire-desktop/issues/3790.

This has happened to me multiple times on macOS. It's frustrating that you can't import a backup of the messages from iOS.

This happened to me several times in my laptop on Ubuntu, 20.04 and now 21.04. Normally when it happens from my house isp, no problem, but when I am connected from a different line, it gets reset. Normally it is not to much of a big deal, but today I lost many important messages and I have to ask companions to resend to me the messages.

If you want me to test anything, please say. Thanks a lot, as always :)

Same here, Ubuntu 20.04. It has happened more often in the past months, before it was rare. As @rosa2 wrote, I can also help with debug. This bug is really annoying.

I have wire in a tower and in a laptop. i had the problem with the laptop. I have several backups. Is it a way to join backups? Thanks

This happened to me twice in the past week! (Using the desktop app.)

⁉ In what world is it acceptable for an app to simply lose all the customer's data? How is this two year old bug not a top priority?

I've been slowing switching over from Wire to Signal... they seem to care more about reliability. Very sad.

one possible solution could be to force a backup before updating. have a good day :)

@rosa2, it doesn't really solve the problem as this also happens during regular use, not just during upgrades.
