How to make background semi-transparent?

My window manager has a really nice blur effect for transparent surfaces. How can I achieve semi-transparent backgrounds with this theme?

I looked through the source, but fail to properly implement that. I tried using alpha, gtkalpha, rgba for the variabes, but it just doesnt work :D
