Improving the Choropleth mode for financial and territorial Data
1. Fact
uMap allows the creation of interactive maps, including choropleth maps, but with limitations in representing financial data associated with territories (EPCI, municipalities, cantons, place names). Currently, it is not possible to dynamically display financial amounts based on zoom levels.
2. Idea
Enhancing the choropleth mode would enable efficient visualization of financial data across territories. The goal is to facilitate the reading of public budgets, especially for applications like mapping participatory budgets, financial allocations, or public investments.
3. Proposal
1-Improvement of the choropleth mode
- Native support for financial data in the form of amounts.
- Color scale adapted to monetary values.
2-Dynamic display based on zoom level
- Aggregation of amounts at low zoom (expressed in k€ or M€).
- Detailed amounts per territory at higher zoom levels.
3-Enhanced data importation
- Improved support for CSV/GeoJSON files containing financial amounts.
- Automatic association of data with geographic perimeters.
Expected benefits:
- Better readability of financial maps.
- Increased adoption of uMap for budget visualizations.
- Improved ergonomics for users handling such data.
Thank you for your work on uMap and for considering this potential enhancement!
