Template maps
We want to work on the idea of "template maps" (like templates in Grist).
When creating a new map, one would have the choice to create a blank map or "map based on template".
A template could maybe be configured eg with a location (center of the map), or with some administrative area, etc.
Then a new map would be created (not yet saved), with configured layers, maybe some context data (can be an administrative boundary for example) and maybe some example data (eg. one or two points for a "roadworks map").
I'm a volunteer firefighter and also a software engineer at HOT (Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team), having templates is something that would be great for using uMap in humanitarian and disaster response, as we'll be able for example to create disaster-based templates, with specific things (icons, colors, baselayers, data integrations) for each disaster (floods, wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc) or for specific humanitarian work.
I don't know if this can be related, but I'll add this user feedback: ‘It would be great to have all my pictos and be able to find them from map to map.’
I could imagine being able to save your template, which would also include your icon set ?
We could image templates as a new table with:
- a name
- a description
- an owner (may also be a team?)
- a umap json (as for backup), with or without data
- maybe the original map (so to be able to edit it again and replace the template ?)
So creating a map from a template would be like importing a umap backup (at code level, not UX level).
Not sure how to integrate icons here, maybe it's another story.
I have felt this would be useful for some time
@andrew-black512 Can you give us an example of how this would be useful to you?
I usually want the same bacground and same area. The new template feature lets me do that,
However, importing a template also changes the maps title which is what I want.
