Make it easier to set layer defaults

I've been finding this workflow a bit clumsy:

1. Add a point
2. Edit properties, such as color
3. Decide that actually I want all points on this layer to have this color
4. Hover over layer selected
5. Click edit button on layer
6. Editing pane switches to editing the layer (the first few times I missed this, as I was looking at the selector on the left, and the layer editing pane looks very similar to the point editing pane)
7. Navigate all the way down through the properties to find the same property that I was just editing
8. Set the color to what I had decided in step 2.
9. Now I've finished, so go and click on the point again, make another change...find myself at step 3 again :)

Suggestion: have a "set as default for layer" button or link that appears when you make a change to a feature. Something vaguely like:
