generating assignments is too finicky right now. I'd like to be able to do it form the Assignments page (!!)

incremental progress as of 25a7a48dedcb509e7f4fdd6da9d1b4bfd8eef22e. still notable to autogenerate, but the use of various helper function greatly simplifies things.

Getting incrementally closer. Assignments.org is now the definitive record of assignments; gradual ocnversion of code using helper functions will slowly make this easier/more reliable.
