Clarified import option text
From reading through GitHub issues and add-on reviews, and trying to use the add-on myself, it seems that many users of the add-in would benefit from clearer import option text. (I would also expect/hope that you could spend less time dealing with users' confusion!) If I am understanding things correctly, I would suggest altering the current ImportExportTools NG menu structure, which is:
- Import mbox file
- Import directly one or more mbox files
- Import one or more mbox files, with its/their subdirectory
- Select a directory where searching the mbox files to import
- Select a directory where searching the mbox files to import (also in subdirectories)
- Import messages
- Import all messages from a directory
- just from the directory
- also from its subdirectories
to:
- Import standard mbox files
- Import selected standard mbox files only
- Import selected standard mbox files and their [internal?] subdirectories
- Import all standard mbox files in a selected directory
- Import all standard mbox files in a selected directory and all its subdirectories ( but all the mbox files are loaded into the same Thunderbird folder) [maybe put the parenthetical in red or something, so it really stands out]
- [greyed out, with no radio button] FUTURE: Import standard mbox files in a selected directory and all its subdirectories, using the directory's structure of subdirectories)
- Import an EML file
- Import all EML files in a selected directory
- in that directory only
- also in its subdirectories
I suggest adding the word "standard" above for mbox files so that users coming from Eudora, for example, are clued in that there may be extra work involved, which is indeed the case for Eudora migrations. I confess that I don't really understand what the mbox-and-its/their-subdirectory option does.
Until importing full mbox subdirectory structure is operational, one thing to possibly mention is that the current "Import all messages from a directory > also from its subdirectories" option can at least create the directory structure for you, which saves a bit of time. It is working pretty well for me, although I am having to add some subdirectories manually.
@libcub thanks for the post! since I took over the extension (the original author was not a native English writer) I have not done anything with the menus. I absolutely agree they could be more clear.
just so you know, ultimately this will will be incorporated into Thunderbird proper I do not think I be able to do it as I am disabled/program by voice ,but I am trying to get things ready.
I am not sure about your above, comment. the export of mbox with structure is working.
what I really need to have is EML exporter with structure I will play with the menus Christopher
I also think people never look at the help which needs more ,but does explain each menu option briefly
Good news that this will get incorporated into Thunderbird itself!
I was commenting on importing, not exporting.
