Error messages spamming in TTY (Page-flip failed on output eDP-1)
Sway Version:
Sway 1.10.1
Debug Log:
https://gist.github.com/houseofleaf/a9f4b5034a36b529d6adcdf14ffe5939
Configuration File:
https://gist.github.com/houseofleaf/1ab5bbef998215b0bef1d7548a06bf19
Specifications:
- Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad t470s
- CPU: Intel i5-7300U
- iGPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
- Hardware acceleration: enabled with
intel-media-driver - Linux kernel version: 6.14.2
Steps to Reproduce:
- Launch sway from TTY with
sway - Launch firefox with
$mod+w - Open any webpage (about:support works)
- Quit firefox with
$mod+q - Exit sway with
$mod+Shift+e
Description:
In TTY, the following two error messages are repeatedly spammed in red text, covering the entire screen:
[wlr] [backend/drm/atomic.c:79] connector eDP-1: Atomic commit failed: Device or resource busy
[sway/desktop/output.c:317] Page-flip failed on output eDP-1
This is triggered whenever firefox opens a webpage or about:support, but not by the firefox home screen or settings interface. This happens without input from the touchpad.
Hi, I get that too with firefox, but I also see a flood of those that I couldn't match to anything specific yet.
Do you encounter the screen becoming blank around the time those errors happen? I cannot confirm if this is related or not, because my only option so far is to put the laptop to sleep and wake up, then display works again.
I also have something similar, running sway on fedora 42.
00:13:48.415 [ERROR] [sway/desktop/output.c:317] Page-flip failed on output DP-3
00:13:48.777 [ERROR] [wlr] [backend/drm/atomic.c:79] connector DP-4: Atomic commit failed: Device or resource busy
00:13:48.777 [ERROR] [sway/desktop/output.c:317] Page-flip failed on output DP-4
00:13:48.927 [ERROR] [wlr] [backend/drm/atomic.c:79] connector DP-4: Atomic commit failed: Device or resource busy
00:13:48.927 [ERROR] [sway/desktop/output.c:317] Page-flip failed on output DP-4
[...]
It is not limited to firefox, this message is spamming stderr. Let me know if I can provide logs or anything that can help.
I noticed that while trying to debug an issue that might be related (but I'm really not sure): the mouse cursor disappears in some contexts, like the "render" part of the Okular PDF viewer, or some JS plots with plotly in Firefox. Maybe not related at all, but this is the only issue I have with sway so far. It was not the case on Fedora 41.
I see the same thing here with debian sway 1.10.1-2 and a number of recent versions of firefox. Every now and then sway will consume a core while logging
[ERROR] [sway/desktop/output.c:317] Page-flip failed on output DP-1
[ERROR] [sway/desktop/output.c:317] Page-flip failed on output DP-2
...
at very high rates. I've later noticed the log file I've redirected sway's output to growing to over a gigabyte.
In case it's relevant, this is always from the sway on an inactive virtual terminal (I often have sway running on two different terminals as different users), and switching to the inactive terminal, opening a new empty tab in firefox, and switching back typically "fixes" it.
switching to scratchpad and back over fullscreen video in chromium triggers these messages
Closing this issue. Updating systemd to version 258 fixed this for me.
I was watching this issue hoping it would be closed for me when Fedora 43 came out with systemd 258 but I'm still getting it after updating:

Nearly constant spam:

Same issue here on my end on my RX 6800XT (Mesa 25.2.6, Linux 6.17.7-300). It's especially apparent when gammastep is fading in the red-light filter.
Shouldn't this issue be opened in the wlroots repo instead?
I'm reopening this issue. I'm still seeing it on my end as well.
