Proposed changes to anomalous research

A collection of proposed changes on how research is conducted on station anomalies.

I think the rifts end up a little thin in this circumstance, but it's an interesting way to get people wandering around maints who are not just tiding.

I'd add a couple of hooks.

  1. Rifts feel like they should interact with Space Dragons.
  2. Rifts feel like they should occasionally randomly open as a station event.

Obviously in the future once more occult antags are added (esp. the Heretic) they can be further iterated on.

This already feels much more fun and loreful than "grief the station a little bit deliberately for points" and I could see my scientist character enjoying the hunt; it'd give a good rota to the round and something to do whilst waiting on fresh artis.

As part of this work it would be good to re-open the excellent "upside-down" shadow realm PR.

Final note: I think Emo talked about "the best rifts probably would be the ones in far-away maints", but that's only because of the types of antags 14 currently has. I doubt many scientists would relish having to hang out at the back of a highpop station's maintenance system once Ling is merged. Ling, Vamp etc massively change what the maint halls mean and the risks of going into them.

I have explored this option, and I like the idea. Of course, some tools will have to be redesigned or removed, I don't see the point of the Gorilla glove in the new system at all.

Sometimes you just gotta give the ol' space-time continuum a good DK smash

WDYM remove the G.O.R.I.L.L.A? How the hell am i supposed to yeet tiders through the hallway without it? :godo:

Is that such a bad thing? I think the Gorilla gauntlet is a pretty unused piece of content at this point, and it's existence as the "main" purpose for anomaly cores has kind of restrained the very interesting interactions proposed for anomaly cores.

thought: make gorilla gauntlet and RD item and then make cores have unique on-use/bomb effects

idk if its good but would sort out the usage issues

Making bombs of cores were denied before, but time has passed, so everything is possible now i guess...

It was denied because of the ease with which anomalies could be generated and the cores harvested. This proposal doesn't do much to change that

And how will there be anomaly infection and will there be? The document does not specify what changes will happen to this part of the mechanics, since now anomalies will not randomly appear on the station, crew members will not be randomly infected by them.
