`inkey` not working in the console version on Debian

I have tried an actual console in Debian without X Window, and two graphical terminal emulators, with and without GNU Screen, just in case, but inkey does not work in the console version of SmallBASIC: the pressed keys are displayed on the screen instead. It works fine in the graphical (SDL) version.
