stable branch fails to build on rpi3

On rpi4, stable builds ok, but at least one user has found it to fail on rpi3. The old master branch can build ok on rpi3, but stable and alpha have trouble. stable-fail.log master-success.log

I have an rpi3 I can take a look at this at some point, I just need to get an SD card set up with Raspbian again
