I'm looking into this as well. Definitely interested in merging this. Any issues with `@custom-variant dark (&:is(.dark *));`?

@mfteuscher heads up: the changes should be made (and tested) in apps/v4. I'm going to upgrade apps/www later.

@mfteuscher please note that this is still on the roadmap. I haven't had time to review yet but I'm definitely considering this approach.
