Read .cpplint or CPPLINT.cfg from root of project?

From what I can see, the only way to configure this extension is to use the VS Code settings.json - is there any way to tell it to just look at a root level config file instead? Otherwise you have to maintain the settings in two different places.

Searched google, SO, and docs but did not find any help - thanks on this!

This is a showstopper for me - I won't be using this extension.
