Why this image instead of the standard one ?

Are you referring to the one GitLab provides or are you referring to the older runners?

  • If you are referring to using this repo instead of GitLab; more environment variables as well as being simpler to get up and going.

  • If you are referring to the older runners, then that's just what GitLab is recommending as their new runners work with the newer versions of GitLab.
