Continuing to monitor this PR :)

Early comment: Prefer to avoid serde and JSON, even if only as a dev-dependency. json/serde is out of line with all the other tools, current and future.

The unix-y equivalent can be parsing KEY=VALUE using regex, or tab separation, etc.
