Inquiry Regarding rrweb's Versioning Plan and Future Release Schedule

Open chuangchen911 opened this issue 8 months ago • 4 comments

Hello rrweb maintainers,

First, thank you for your continued work and maintenance of this valuable project. I'd like to kindly inquire about the versioning plan for rrweb, specifically regarding:

Formal Release Schedule It's been approximately 3 years since the last stable release (v1.1.3 in Apr 4, 2022). Could you share whether there's an official timeline for the next stable version release?

Alpha Version Strategy While we've seen consistent alpha releases (currently at 2.0.0-alpha.18), could you clarify if this pre-release pattern will continue as the primary distribution method, or if there are plans to transition back to stable releases?

2.0.0 Stable Release Outlook Many community members are eagerly awaiting the official 2.0.0 release. Are there specific blockers or timelines the team could share regarding this milestone?

We completely understand maintaining OSS projects requires significant effort, but clarity on these points would help downstream users and contributors better align with the project's roadmap.

Thank you again for your dedication to this project, and we look forward to your insights.

Hi @chuangchen911 thanks for reaching out, main blocker right now is creating a nice 2.0 blogpost, but maybe we can do the release without this. Hopefully @eoghanmurray and I can sync on it this week, then we can move over to beta, maybe even RC, or straight to stable

Hi @Juice10 ,I hope you're doing well. It has been about a month since we last discussed the release progress. I wanted to check in and see if there have been any updates regarding the blogpost and the upcoming release.

I understand that @eoghanmurray and you were planning to sync up, and I’m curious if there have been any developments since then. Is there a revised timeline for moving to beta, RC, or stable?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Greetings -

I'd second @chuangchen911 's comments about releases and roadmap - I'd raised substantively the same issue earlier in March #1664 - with no response.

This is a truly great project, but it appears to have stalled out around 4 months ago. I fully concur with @chuangchen911 's comments regarding OSS projects - i.e. we and the community greatly appreciate your efforts and hard work. That said, for those folks incorporating projects like this into customer facing software, it's difficult to continue relying on a project when feedback is scarce and updates/releases appear somewhat haphazard.

Please don't take my (and others) comments as in any way snarky - it would just be great to see a little more clarity in terms of scheduling and what we should expect in terms of priorities/a roadmap.

Cheers, and thank you again.

Echoing others' sentiments, New Relic would be glad to help in any way we can to enable a path to release.

Hi @Juice10

Thanks again for your continuous work on this project!

I would like to follow up on the release schedule of the next official version. We are currently using rrweb in a company project, and due to internal policy, we are required to use officially released versions rather than commits or prereleases.

As there's been no new official release for a while, our project timeline may be impacted if a new version is not published soon. Could you please consider releasing a new version, or let us know if there’s an estimated timeframe?

Your support is much appreciated!

Best regards,

I think we'll be able to do the release once https://github.com/rrweb-io/rrweb/pull/1704 is merged (agreed upon) I'm just waiting for an okay from the other core team members on that.
