@peterdschwartz when you copy-and-paste the PR description into the merge commit, remove all the markup. It creates unprintable characters in the log.

How can the variables be documented better? Metadata in the history file? Comments in the code? Change the names?

Its possible the problem is somewhere else and the first place to try and trap a non-physical value just keeps finding it.
