I think gettext is the way to go here. It is well documented and widely used.

I forked this code and added horizontal and vertical options here: https://github.com/richthedev/css-resize-polyfill/blob/master/lib/polyfill-resize.js

I did some work on this, but it only works for vertical space and with select2 theme. You can find it here: https://github.com/iamWh1sp3r/ui-select/tree/select2-above
