Show non printable characters

Is there (or could there be) an option in Retext to show non printing characters such as spaces, tabs and line breaks etc?

Many thanks,

No, there is no such option at the moment.

Also I don't know your use case, but in my opinion it won't be as useful as in e.g. MS Word or LibreOffice:

  • ReText uses monospace font, so the spaces are hard to not notice.
  • Spaces at the end of line are highlighted.
  • Tabs are automatically converted to spaces by default.
  • You can enable line numbers in settings, and this will help you see where one line ends and another starts.
  • If you want to insert some other non-printable characters, I can suggest you to use HTML entities like   to make them more visible.

So do you have any specific use case that you can explain, or we can close this issue?

Dear Dmitri,

Thank you.

The main use is that it is helpful to be able to see exactly what's in the file. It helps (for example) to be able to see a small dot wherever there is a space so that it is easy to recognise how many spaces there are in a line of text (e.g. when indenting)

If it were not a vast quantity of work it would be good to have this available at some point.

best regards,
