I doubt that fwudp updated something automatically. Unfortunately the firmware is a black box, I wish we had some more insights into what's going on inside that.

Right, I think the best option is checking what Windows does here (and whether that happens there, too) with IRPMon.

You could try to pin the package version (see e.g. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/162700/apt-pinning-package-versions). AFAIK, this should be fixed with recent Ubuntu/Debian distro versions, so maybe also consider updating to those.

There should be an option in the UEFI menu for enabling Secure boot with "Microsoft and 3rd party keys", you need to select that.

Hmm interesting, seems like the UEFI is quite a bit different than on newer generations. Not sure if this is an UEFI issue, a software issue, or a setup issue......
