[ISSUE][SCUS_973.53] Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal freezes during Qwark vid-comic 5 [SMB]
Disclaimer Issue reports for OPL version which were not downloaded from the official GitHub repo are not accepted. Before posting the issue confirm that you meet the below requirements.
- [x] I have checked existing OPL issues for duplicates and found none https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader/issues
- [x] I am using either OPL beta version from https://github.com/ps2homebrew/open-ps2-loader/actions?query=workflow%3ACI+is%3Asuccess++ or OPL stable version from https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader/releases
Describe the issue Qwark vid-comic 5 cannot be completed, music skips and the game blackscreens after you die or restart the level
Configuration (please complete the following information):
- Console Model: SCPH-39001
- Open PS2 Loader revision: 1.0.0
- Open PS2 Loader mode: SMB
- Information about affected games (if any):
- SCUS 973.53, verified against redump: http://redump.org/disc/11307/
- md5sum

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- In SMB mode, boot the game and load this savedata or this VMC
- Go to the VG-9000 and start vid-comic 5
- Press the start button and choose "Restart Level"
- Attempt to play through the vid-comic
- Listen for the music to start skipping, this is how you'll know you've hit the crash
- The game will hang at a black screen the next time you die or restart the level
Expected behavior Any time you die or choose to restart the level, Qwark should appear beginning of the level and the game should not crash
Additional context "Restart Level" is optional, you can also die once, and on your next life, the game will crash (Nefarious/Lawrence dialog is heard, music begins to repeat). You can also reproduce the issue by starting the vid-comic, immediately exiting it, and then starting it again. Common denominator seems to be the second time the level starts. I'm not good enough to have ever beaten the level in one go so I'm not sure what would happen in that case.
I tried with mode 1 and mode 2 (separately) but this did not make a difference.
Any advice would be appreciated! Spent a good bit of time puzzling this one out. Eventually figured out that I could work around the issue by using a retail DVD and juggling savedata around a bit. Would be nice to know why it happens though.
Same issue here, only a different console - SCPH-90004. I reproduced it on OPL versions v1.0.0 and v1.2.0-Beta-1826-271338d. Version 0.9.3 works fine. The game does not crash no matter how many times you die/reset and at what stage of the level.
Edit: I was using VMC when testing different OPL versions.

Thanks for the log :) although I'm unsure how to interpret it or what things like OPL UDPBD or PS2Link are. I'll have to look those up!
I noticed my VMC and savedata links in the OP were broken so I've fixed those. Sorry! Hopefully they will help with testing and debugging since you have to get fairly far into the game before you're able to hit the bug.
Ouch! 57KiB of free iop ram with the small udpbd driver will couse problems when using the smb protocol, or adding pademu or mcemu.
When exactly does this drop to 57KiB happen?

its all black screen.
so i ran a new test with MODES 1,3 and 6. Got to the main menu, but the menu was glitched and not properly drawn and ended up crashing PS2.

My PS2 model is SCPH-90008. Compatibility modes do not help. I use redump images and don't use PADEMU, VMC, GSM.
I am also experiencing this with SCES_524.56 over SMB using d26da79c59d03c3d42dbbdb5c190760cc41f9444 on SCPH-75004.
As another workaround I learned that PCSX2 can use OpenPS2Loader VMCs so I played the problematic vid-comic on it and didn't experience further significant issues upon returning to OpenPS2Loader.
Sorry for my ignorance, but does anyone have a solution to launch Ratchet 3 over SMB on OPL 1.2v 1917-ifcaro? I was trying to launch the game in modes 2 and 6, but I got an error when saving these settings. Both USA and EU version doesn't work and behaves in the same way.
Or did anyone manage to launch Ratchet 3 in another OPL version other than 0.9.3? I don't care which version I run if it has GSM settings and can run Ratchet 3 😄
@lukasvolcik, check out my report here. This game does not work via SMB, only via USB and UDPBD (proof here).
I have been playing this game with OPL and SMB just fine (excluding the vid-comic 5, see https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader/issues/389#issuecomment-1536615285, and https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader/issues/803) and I understand the issue opener was also using SMB.
I have documented my setup here as a note to self if it's any help.
yeah I tried it over USB, but it still bothers me how audio is faster than video in most cut scenes in all R&C trilogy games even over SMB. Does anyone have a fix for that? I tried launching with several modes but still the same... not sure if I tested mode 1
instead, I will play R&C 3 HD emulated on RPCS3 on 4K 😸 since it's my favorite PS2 game and I was looking forward to playing it while completing the whole Ratchet series... it was a bit downer when I finally wanted to start the game and found out specifically this game in the trilogy doesn't work over SMB xD tried both USA and EU versions on PS2 slim (OPL versions tested: v1.2 1917-ifcaro + 1955, v1.1 and even 0.9.3)
@AKuHAK, it's another game that works for some and doesn't for others. Just like Disney's Treasure Planet.
This issue may be due to this.
@10522 can you check with this version
@10522 can you check with this version
I tried this version and both USA and EU ratchet 3 still freezes on startup. GSM=HDTV1080p. Tested both with modes 2,6 and without modes.

Weird, it already worked on my console before with no problems via SMB (SCPH-90010), anyway i tested the version @AKuHAK posted and it works without any compatibility mode, i died several times without freezing
