The Wire (I2C) library is very out of date and can't do a Platform IO update to bring it up to the latest version

The upstream version of the Wire library was updated quite some time ago to fix some lock up issues and also provide a way to recover the bus in lock out scenarios but even the very latest ST STM32 seems to include a very old version of Wire without this.

Does anyone know the reason for this and how it could be fixed?
